Alastair Cook gets a standing ovation from Twitter after he scored his final ton in England colours
He smacked eight boundaries en route his three-figure score.
After England’s stupendous victory over India at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton, Alastair Cook called it quits from international cricket. The last one year hasn’t been memorable for the left-hander by any stretch of the imagination and he mentioned to have given his blood and sweat to English cricket. The left-hander notched a 244 not out against Australia last year at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Apart from that, he couldn’t make much of an impact with the willow and the poor run of form impacted him to a significant extent, so much so that he eventually decided to bid adieu. The ongoing Test at Kennington Oval in London was always going to be an emotional ride for the Gloucester-born cricketer and he didn’t let his fans and his team down in his final hurray by any means
Cook comes to the party one last time
In the first innings, he scored 71 runs with the help of eight boundaries after which he was nipped out by Jasprit Bumrah. However, he came into his own in the second innings and notched his 33rd and most importantly, his last ton in Test cricket off 210 deliveries. He smacked eight boundaries en route his three-figure score. However, the ton came in a bizarre manner.
Five runs came off the first delivery of Ravindra Jadeja’s over, out of which four came in overthrows. Bumrah made a wild throw after which the ball ended up beyond the boundary ropes. His family is present at the venue and they erupted in joy after Cook accomplished the century.
Moreover, he also has helped England to a massive lead in the second innings that may have paved the way for another English victory. After he notched his ton, Twitter bowed down to him and gave him a standing ovation for yet another batting masterclass in his illustrious career.
