Alastair Cook on verge of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record
England’s Test skipper Alastair Cook is all set to make it to the history books of cricket by becoming the youngest cricketer to complete 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Cook is just 36 runs away from the milestone and will break Sachin Tendulkar’s 11-year old record. Sachin reached the 10,000 mark at the age of 32. The Indian batting maestro set the record 11 years back in March 2005 against Pakistan in Kolkata, a little more than a month before his 32nd birthday.
31-year old Cook will have his chance when Sri Lanka tours England this summer. He has amassed 9964 runs in 126 matches so far. Having made his debut way back in 2006, Cook has been one of the mainstays of the English batting line up. He has been a successful captain too for the English side. He led England to a historic series win in India in 2012 and had scored 2 centuries in the series.
His rise to fame came when he was the key man in taking England to a historic Ashes win in 2011. Cook scored 766 runs in 7 innings at an average of 127.66 in the series and was in supreme form throughout the series. He further led England to two more Ashes win 2013 and 2015.
When Cook gets to the 10000 mark, he will become the first English cricketer ever to reach the milestone and 12th overall in the history of Test cricket. The kind of form he is in the current domestic season, with 3 centuries to his name already, it looks like he will definitely seal the deal in the Sri Lanka series.
In terms of the number of innings taken to reach 10,000 runs, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara hold the record of taking only 195 innings to reach the coveted milestone.
