Alex Hales disregarded our values with his actions: Eoin Morgan
"He did not adhere to the things we have worked."
A few days ago, England batsman Alex Hales found himself in grave danger after he was found guilty of recreational drug use for the second time. The Nottingham cricketer was thereafter handed with a 21-day suspension from cricket. To his agony, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also withdrew his name from the provisional World Cup squad, much to his disappointment.
Moreover, his name was also withdrawn from the T20I and ODIs against Pakistan and Ireland. Ashley Giles, former English cricketer and the current director of England cricket, said on Monday that the decision was taken in order to create the ‘right environment’ for the Three Lions during the World Cup and ensure that they are free from ‘any sort of distractions’.
However, Giles also said that it’s not the end of Hales’ career and he will have his chance to make amends. Later, the 366 Group that represents Hales, told that Giles had assured that the 30-year-old would be free to play the mega event provided the batsman completed his punishment and rehabilitation measures according to the ECB’s recreational drug policies.
Morgan shows his displeasure
The developments have left Hales absolutely devastated. In the meantime, Eoin Morgan, who captains England’s ODI and T20I teams, lashed out at him and said that the right-hander wasn’t on the same page as the rest of the members and had ‘disregard for the values’.
“Alex’s actions showed a complete disregard for the values we have put in place. He did not adhere to the things we have worked towards for a long time,” the 32-year-old Morgan was quoted as saying in the Telegraph Sport.
Previously Alex Hales took an indefinite break from cricket due to personal reasons and it was confirmed by his county club Nottinghamshire. As far as England’s World Cup campaign is concerned, Morgan’s side will play their first match against South Africa on Thursday, May 30 at the Kennington Oval in London.
