At the start of 2019, Alex Hales was someone who was in contention to play the World Cup at home. However, the Nottinghamshire player was dropped from all England squads ahead of international summer after failing a second ECB recreational drug test. This meant that the batsman couldn’t even play the World Cup.

For someone who had been the part of the English limited-overs side during their rebuilding phase since 2015, was extremely heartbreaking. During an interview, the 31-year-old opened up about his disappointment of not making it to the World Cup squad which eventually won the trophy.

Hales revealed that the regret will always stay with him that he could’ve been part of the squad if he hadn’t made some mistakes. Though, he is hopeful that he might get another opportunity to be part of a World Cup-winning side.

“I am always going to have a part of me that thinks I should have been part of that (World Cup squad) if I hadn’t made a few errors in my personal life,” he said in an interview with Sportsmail. “I just hope the damage that’s been done isn’t terminal and I get another bite of the cherry,” he added.

Alex Hales proud of England team

Looking back on the time he was dropped from the squad, Alex Hales stated that it was tough for him. He said that the entire country should be proud of the success of the side. “Initially it was tough, but I don’t find it tough to watch back now. It’s something the whole country should be proud of. The game of cricket in this country is a lot bigger than my feelings ”

The batsman credited the team’s determination and hard work and regrets that he wasn’t part of the side during the World Cup. However, he is proud of the fact he was the part of the same group between 2015 and 2019. “But at the same time, you look back on what the guys achieved and it’s nothing short of what they deserve. The determination, hard work and talent in that team was incredibly special.

“Obviously, it’s gutting to not get the final showcase at the World Cup, but to be a part of that for three or four years, I am very proud of that,” the 31-year-old clarified. Alex Hales has played 70 ODIs and 60 T20Is for England apart from playing 11 Tests. Since getting dropped from England side, he has played in various franchise leagues like Caribbean Premier League, Mzansi Super League and Big Bash League.

His performance in these leagues have been good and he hopes he can make a comeback to the national team. “My England career has been pretty good so far in T20 and that’s not even playing to the best of my ability. I’d love to get that chance again. I’ve moved on and grown from the mistakes I’ve made in my private life and hopefully, people can forgive and forget. Hopefully, I get that chance again because I feel I’m in a good headspace,” he further said.

England captain Eoin Morgan had also recently revealed that Hales can make a comeback if he can gain the trust of the players and team management.
