All I can do is score runs, says David Warner on his chances of making a comeback to national team
Warner, meanwhile, seemed to have made peace with his future.
As David Warner edges closer to 29 March 2019, the day his lengthy ban ends, the confusion over his immediate future with the Australian team just elevates. Warner’s career took a bizarre turn in March last year when he along with Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith was caught in the ball-tampering scandal. A furious Cricket Australia had dealt the matter with stern hands and had imposed lengthy ban on the trio.
The cricket board slapped a 12-month ban on Smith and Warner while handing rookie Bancroft a nine-month which ended last month. The trio was not only banned from playing international cricket but also from first-class cricket and the Big Bash League. Warner and Smith made their return to competitive cricket through the inaugural Global T20 League in Canada while Bancroft returned to the field through Darwin’s limited-overs Strike League.
Warner is now gearing up for his maiden appearance in the Bangladesh Premier League. The left-handed batsman will lead Sylhet Sixers in the competition. And Warner is hopeful that performances in T20 leagues will help him win his place in the national team. There will not be much time left in the next World Cup when Warner’s ban ends. His ban will end in March while the World Cup will get underway on May 30.
All I can do is score runs
Warner, meanwhile, seemed to have made peace with his future, saying that the final decision rests with the selectors while the best thing he could do at the moment is putting his best performance on the field.
“It is up to the selectors whether or not they want to pick me. At the end of the day, all I can do is score runs in this tournament and the IPL, keep putting my hand up and making sure that I am the best person I can be,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Warner as saying.
He further opened up on his life away from hustle and bustle of international cricket. The southpaw said that he was spending a lot of time with the family, “Life has been good for me. I have been spending time with the family. I wouldn’t be able to do that if I was sitting in the sidelines. It is about getting the best out of myself and growing as a human being. The most important thing was being a father and husband at home,” Warner said.
“Now it is down to playing cricket again and making sure I get Sylhet Sixers on top of the table,” he added.
BPL has started from January 5 and will end on February 8 with Sylhet Sixers playing their opening match of the tournament on January 6 against Comilla Victorians.
