Former legendary South African pacer Allan Donald recently opened up on the toughest batters he has faced in his life. Donald is known as one of the greatest pacers to have ever played cricket in South Africa. He added that though he played against several world-class cricketers, he has few names who stand at the top of his list due to their various unique factors.
It was no wonder that Donald began his list with India’s all-time great batsman Sachin Tendulkar. Talking about his great batsmen, Donald put Tendulkar on the no. 1 spot and added he has the best technique in the world and can adapt to any part of the world.
“The guy who’s technically the best and I’ve played against is Tendulkar. I found it in South Africa that he could adapt to the conditions and our techniques better than any other Indian batsmen back in those times. If he stands on the crease for like 28 or 30 overs, you know you are going to have a long-long day. He played ball better than anyone else and also left it better than all,” said Donald while speaking on a YouTube channel Cricket Life Stories.
Another Genius, Brian Lara is the best stroke maker I’ve ever played against: Allan Donald
Donald named his other great batsmen as West Indies great Brian Lara, Australian all-rounder Steve Waugh and English cricketer Michael Atherton. Donald praised Lara for his stroke play and added he had a great back lift. He added one man who could make the game really ugly and hard was Steve Waugh.
“Another Genius, Lara, the best stroke maker I’ve ever played against. He had a great back lift and could play very aggressively. We had to be very aggressive against him too to make him stop. He could also play some of the most unique shots which were actually laughable but he carried them with great spend as he had superb pair of hands,” concluded Donald.
Donald also lauded Atherton and Waugh for their skills while they played back in their times.
