It is rare to see a player winning the Man of the Match award for his fielding effort. In the first T20I against Pakistan, David Miller was poor with the bat as he scored just 10 runs using up 12 balls in the process. His fielding effort made all the difference as Miller took four catches and affected a couple of run outs to turn the game in South Africa’s favour.
This ability of David Miller to make an impact on the game even when he does not contribute with the bat makes him an important player. Former South African fast bowler Allan Donald believes that the left-hander is the key player for Proteas in the World Cup. He further added that he does not expect AB de Villiers to make a return to International cricket so players like Miller will be important.
“If you look at where AB has left us, Miller is absolutely key for South Africa at this World Cup, I would but I think the rest of the world hopes that AB doesn’t make a last minute U-turn and avail himself for Cricket World Cup selection. I read that AB said he would sit down with Cricket South Africa, but I can’t see de Villiers returning to the international fold for South Africa.” Donald told Sport24.
Allan Donald on the retirement of AB de Villiers
The legendary fast bowler believes that AB de Villiers has made up his mind and won’t make a U-turn by returning to International cricket. He talked about critics and fans having various opinions about the retirement of the right-handed batsman. Donald said that retirement should be the decision of an individual and others must respect the decision.
“I think he has made his mind up and that is fair enough. Everyone has their own opinions on AB calling time on his Proteas career and some are harsher than others. I still believe that it’s an individual’s absolute right to say, I have made a call and am moving on.AB has decided to move on and you have to respect that.” Donald further added.
