Sony Pictures Networks India’s EVP and business head – sports clusters, Prasana Krishnan, told reporters in Chennai that former Indian cricketers who are from the city will feature in the commentary box for the IPL this year. Sadagoppan Ramesh, Hemang Badani and VB Chandrasekhar are some of the prominent names who will be among the Tamil commentators for the star-studded event.
He also mentioned that the regional language commentary for the IPL had been offered for the past two years. However, on this occasion, it has been made available on the ESPN platform. The Chennai Super Kings team didn’t feature in last year’s edition of the IPL as the RM Lodha committee had suspended India Cements, the owners of CSK, for a period of two years. Along with CSK, the Rajasthan Royals team was also dissolved as their owners Jaipur IPL faced the same suspension as India Cements.
The committee had also banned for life Gurunath Meiyappan, a former team official of Super Kings, and Raj Kundra, a former Royals co-owner, from being involved in cricket matches in any way.
As a result of the ban on both CSK and Rajasthan Royals, two new teams were formed for the 2016 edition of the annual tournament. IPL 9 saw the addition of Rising Pune Supergiants, led by former CSK skipper MS Dhoni. Gujarat Lions with Suresh Raina at the helm was the other team which was added to the list of 8 franchises.
After a series of successful tournaments, Dhoni didn’t have much success with his new team as the Supergiants failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Lions, however, had a great season, although they didn’t make it to the all-important final.
The 10th season of the IPL begins on 5th April with defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad going up against three-time finalists Royal Challengers Bangalore.
