I always keep learning from MS Dhoni: Rohit Sharma

Stand-in skipper of the Indian Cricket Team Rohit Sharma has been a revelation in the Asia Cup as India successfully defended the title on Friday. Rohit was in fine form with the bat during the tournament, scoring as many as 317 runs while averaging just over 105. However, as everyone praised Rohit for his dominance with the bat, the opening batsman credited his success to MS Dhoni, and said that it was all about learning the art of staying calm in pressure situations.

Rohit Sharma led India to victory in the Nidahas Trophy which took place in Sri Lanka earlier this year. He was the top scorer for his side in the all-important final, which India won off the final delivery thanks to Dinesh Karthik’s blistering six over cover. The Hitman has now added another feather to his cap in the form of the Asia Cup victory.

Virat Kohli was rested after a hectic tour of England in which he dominated with the bat, amassing 593 runs from 5 Test matches. He is likely to lead the side once again when India take on the Windies next month.

Speaking about MS Dhoni’s influence on his captaincy, Rohit Sharma said, “We always keep learning from Dhoni bhai because he was an amazing captain. I’ve seen him captaining for so many years. He doesn’t panic and thinks before taking a decision. We have played under him for so many years, he always advises us, whatever be the situation.”

“We played some good cricket throughout the tournament and this is the reward of all the hard work throughout the tournament. I have been part of games like this before and credit to the guys in the middle to handle the pressure and to cross the finishing line was a fantastic effort,” he was quoted as saying in Indian Express.

Rohit also gave the Bangladeshis credit for the way they tested the Indians in the final. “You have to give some credit to Bangladesh. They put us under pressure in the first 10 overs,” he said.

The Bangladesh openers got off to a brilliant start, stitching together a partnership of 120. But Rohit said that he was constantly looking to get the spinners into play once the ball got slightly old. “We thought if the ball got older, the spinners would do the work for us. It was important to keep it tight and we have done that well throughout the tournament,” he remarked.

When praised for his captaincy, Rohit said the credit goes to the whole team. “If you have a team like that, the captain will always look good. It wouldn’t be easy if we didn’t have the support of the remaining 10 players, so I am really proud of the boys,” he added.
