An honour and privilege to be retained as coach: Ravi Shastri
"It is a clear diktat, whoever wants to play for this team, the fielding standards of that player will have to be of the highest level," said Ravi Shastri.
India’s head coach Ravi Shastri seemed to be elated after he was reappointed as the head coach for Team India. In a video released by the BCCI, he thanked the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) – Kapil Dev, Shantha Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad for having the faith in him to continue for another 26 months. He said that it’s been a privilege and honour to be a part of Team India.
Ravi Shastri said that he chose this job because he had the belief in this team that they’d set a legacy going forward. While he felt they were on track, he even mentioned that there is always a scope for improvement. Moreover, he termed this to be a very exciting phase with the youth rising up the ranks.
“The reason why I came in here…I had this belief in this team. I had the belief that they could leave a legacy that very few teams have left behind. In the years to come, now just at the moment, the legacy that other teams will like to emulate. That is the desire, we are on track. There is always room for improvement. And with youth coming in through the ranks, I think it is a very exciting time,” he said.
‘You’ve got to learn from your mistakes’
Talking about some of the mistakes in recent times, Ravi Shastri said that they’ve to learn from those errors. He wants to team to constantly strive and get over various barriers. Moreover, he said wants to improve upon the performances further in the times to come.
“See you’ve got to learn from your mistakes. There is nobody perfect. When you strive for excellence and when you strive to raise the bar day-in and day-out, then you’ve got to pay attention to that detail. When you do mess up or when you have an off-day, don’t let that day go by. Make sure that you are focussing and concentrating on how you can get over that barrier. So, that will be the endeavour of this team. It’s been superbly consistent in the last two or three years. That’s the bar they’ve set and now it’s up to them to raise the bar,” said the 57-year-old.
Ravi Shastri said that they will invest in the youth and added that there was enough time for experimentation. Furthermore, he wants to make this the best fielding side in the world. “It is a clear diktat, whoever wants to play for this team, the fielding standards of that player will have to be of the highest level,” he further mentioned.
