Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews has returned to India and have joined his franchise Delhi Daredevils after flying to Colombo for Champions Trophy squad selection meeting. Daniel Alexander, Administrator of Island cricket shared the news through his micro-blogging site twitter. Mathews sustained a hamstring injury during the limited-overs series against South Africa and missed the following T20 series and also the 3 match T20I series in Australia.

He is arguably one of the greatest all-rounders to emerge from the island nation currently and their Champions Trophy hopes lies with the talented all-rounder. He lends the ideal balance to Sri Lanka but given the current team and their credentials, Mathews might have to wage a lone battle in the field.

His injuries have made him reluctant to use himself as a bowler which has affected Sri Lanka to a certain extent. For the Delhi Daredevils, the all-rounder has only played 2 matches in this edition so far and has scored 32 runs. He hasn’t been successful with the ball yet but he might be an important member for Delhi as the tournament reaches the business end.

Mathews is a very effective limited overs player and can play according to the situation. While he knows to play the sheet anchor’s role to perfection, he also has the ability to strike some lusty blows and clear any boundary ropes. He is a terrific finisher for Sri Lanka and has done it for them time and again.

His bowling is pretty effective too and his slower bouncers are extremely difficult to read from the batsmen’s point of view. He is also a dynamic fielder and goes about doing his business in a silent manner. He earlier played for the Kolkata Knight Riders and had some decent seasons with them before moving to Pune Warriors India. He was bought by DD at the 2015 auction and was released in 2016 but he was again brought back by the same franchise this year.
