Sri Lankan veteran cricketer Angelo Mathews is all set to return to competitive cricket after spending a long time away from the game. He was on a long injury layoff which prohibited him from participating in the Nidahas Trophy as well, which was organized as Sri Lanka was celebrating its 70th year of Independence.

Mathews will kick-start this new phase of his career by participating in the Inter-Provincial tournament. He said that the tournament has given youngsters a lot of exposure and is keen to get back on the field. He also expressed his gratitude to all the medical staff and the Lankan cricket board for their relentless support during these tough hours.

“I am looking forward to start playing again. I am thankful to all the people who have helped me out. All the physiotherapists, trainers, doctors and Sri Lanka Cricket for giving me the best option,” Mathews said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

So far the Inter-Provincial tournament has been very competitive. A few injuries here and there was a bit of a drawback, but most importantly, with the top players playing against each other the games have been very competitive. The tournament has given a lot of exposure for some of the younger guys who are coming through,” Mathews said.

Should start thinking about the World Cup: Mathews

Sri Lankan cricket is experiencing a horrendous phase with their quality and standard diminishing quite drastically ever since the retirement of some senior players. Mathews is right now their only hope to help the side recover from the traumatic defeats in recent times. He clearly has stated that they will be focusing solely on the World Cup next year and will prepare accordingly.

Talking about if he can bowl in the times to come, he said, “For the next few months, I am not keen on bowling. The selectors are of the view that we start with batting only. I am confident that if I get through the next few tours, approaching the World Cup, I will be able to bowl again. Not bowling is only going to be temporary and won’t be permanent. There are concerns about my workload and that has to be managed.”

“We have had a few chats with our head coach and the selectors. Everything that we do from now onwards will be thinking about the World Cup. We have got just over 12 months and time will fly. We are planning a few things with the World Cup in mind. At the same time, realize that every bilateral series is important as well. Having a winning momentum is crucial,” Mathews concluded.
