Anil Kumble applies for Indian head coach position

Former Indian Test skipper Anil Kumble has reportedly applied for the position of head coach of the Indian cricket team. Kumble, one of the best spinners to be produced by India beyond the shout of a doubt is one of 57 candidates who have responded to the advertisement posted by the BCCI. The deadline for the applications closed on June 10 and on Sunday the BCCI announced that 57 applications had been received from both Indian and overseas candidates.
Kumble had an illustrious career that began in 1994 and concluded in 2008. During this time, he also went on to become India’s leading wicket taker in Test matches with 618 wickets to his name. He also boasts of runs with the bat courtesy of a Test century in England.
Although Kumble does not really have any experience in coaching, he has served as the mentor for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. After announcing his retirement from international cricket, Kumble served as the skipper for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and also led them to the final of the IPL in the 2009 edition that was played in South Africa.
The 57 candidates include prominent cricketing legends in the form of Sandeep Patil, Ravi Shastri, and even Dav Whatmore. With Kumble having filed his nomination, he has already become one of the favorites to fill in the vacant position.

According to the BCCI’s latest press release, “The scrutiny of the applications received is now being carried out by the office of the honorary secretary (Ajay Shirke) of the BCCI. After this initial scrutiny, the list of candidates who meet the criteria will be processed for further consideration.”
The final decision on who is the next Indian coach is likely to be announced after the BCCI working committee meeting in Dharamsala on June 25.
