The Kumble-Kohli saga just doesn’t seem to have a climax as there is an added twist to the story every day. It’s been three days since Anil Kumble stepped down as the Indian head coach and since then, a different story has been cropping up with varied angles from sources.
PTI has now access to this document Kumble submitted to the Committee of Administrators (COA) which he had submitted on 21 May 2017, titled ‘Restructuring of Remuneration And Contracts of Personnel Of The Indian Cricket Team’.
In a 19-page proposal on restructuring the contracts given by BCCI, Anil Kumble had mentioned that the head coach of the side should be given 60% of the captain’s estimated earnings. This document written by the former Indian skipper also supports Indian coaches working in IPL to earn more, without specifying if it amounts to ‘Conflict of Interest’.
Former COA member Ramachandra Guha clearly was against this dual role of coaches for both Indian and IPL sides, taking an indirect jibe at Rahul Dravid. Dravid currently is the head coach of the Under-19 Indian side and was the mentor of IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils. He had termed national coaches “moonlighting” for IPL teams as a clear case of Conflict of Interest.
Enablers
He also used the term “Enablers” to describe the role of support staff in the team. He wanted Sanjay Bangar’s salary to be hiked from current Rs 1 crore to Rs 2.25 crore while R Sridhar should get Rs 1.75 crore instead of the current Rs 1 crore with “retrospective effect” from June 1, 2016.
Generally, the players are kept out of their contracts during the IPL season and Anil Kumble had mentioned in Page 11, Point No 9 that the same system should be materialised in the case of the coaches. He feels the support staff should be given a fair chance to augment their incomes.
In another column for “Annual Retainership Fees” for all formats of the game, Kumble wrote, “20 percent of the Retainer money can be given subject to a player managing his fitness levels and other team fitness standards during the year.”
The 132 Test old veteran had also requested to pay Rs. 2 Crore per player on winning a World Cup or any other 50 over tournament whereas World T20 should carry a prize money of Rs 1 crore per player.
