The much-anticipated stint of Anil Kumble will begin with the Indian preparatory camp at the NCA in Bangalore. On the 29th of June, Kumble will return to the familiar surroundings of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore where he is expected to familiarize himself with the Indian cricketers. Nearly eight years after calling time on his international career, the legendary spinner hits the road again, kicking off his stint with a week-long camp for the West Indies-bound team at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
On his first day back, Kumble will be hoping to re-familiarize himself with surroundings that he was once extremely familiar with. He will also be hoping to get off on the right foot with Virat Kohli as they look forward to a long and arduous schedule ahead. They play 13 of their 17 Tests at home apart from the eight ODIs and two T20Is they will play against England and New Zealand.
While most of the country’s cricketing fraternity is certainly rejoicing, it will certainly be a daunting task for the former leg-spinner. While his reputation and work ethic have certainly got him through the door and to the job, it will be a daunting task to orchestrate from the dressing sheds. Although he has presented a view for the future, Kumble has been handed just a year contract.
The last time India played a Test match at the Caribbean was in 2011. Despite this, there are only four players who remain from the squad that played five years ago. They include incumbent skipper Virat Kohli, Ishant Sharma, Murali Vijay, and Amit Mishra. The four-match Test series will begin at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua.
