Pakistan won the 1992 World Cup in England under the leadership of Imran Khan, the former all-rounder from Lahore in Punjab. After he hung his boots back following his team’s victorious run, he gradually started plying his trade in politics. In April 1996, he founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and became the party’s national leader. He contested for the National Assembly in October 2002.

He was again elected to the Parliament in the 2013 elections as his party emerged as the second largest in terms of votes. This year, he contested the General Elections, which took place on July 25, 2018. Apart from Khan’s party, Pakistan Muslim League (PML), headed by Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari were the other participants in the elections.

The best part was that he could bowl with the same intensity

He garnered 109 seats and was crowned as the Prime Minister of the country. He made an announcement via statement at his residence and the news has been confirmed today. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad talked about Khan’s attributes, both as an individual and a sportsperson as per reports in Sportstar.

“He knew that he was different. His nature, persona was different. One could make out the difference easily between him and the then Pakistani team. He was a very educated man, well-mannered and knew how to carry himself and how to talk with whom. He had arrogance about himself but that did not really show every time, everywhere. Otherwise, he was quite friendly,” Gaekwad mentioned.

Khan was one of Pakistan’s gun bowlers in the 1992 World Cup. He scored 185 runs in eight matches and also nipped out seven wickets. In the final at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, Khan scored 72 runs and picked up the last wicket of Richard Illingworth. Gaekwad also hailed the 65-year-old for his relentless efforts on the cricket pitch as a reason for his successful career.

“He was a different kind of bowler. The best part was that he could bowl with the same intensity with new ball or old one. He had the speed and variation with which he used to take wickets,” he added.
