Emulating the different short-term franchise-based cricket leagues over the world, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) started its own Twenty20 league in the year 2012. The fifth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will start from the month of November later this year. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) did not organise any opening ceremony last year, but a dazzling opening ceremony is on the cards for this year.
According to BCB, the tournament will commence from 5th November and the opening ceremony will be held on 2nd November. Reports suggested that BCB is talking to some reputed singers from India to rock the stage on the occasion. The top names in the reckoning are popular Indian singers Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal.
No Shah Rukh & Alia in the opening ceremony
Previously, the BCB hinted that they might invite Bollywood megastars like Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt for the event. But they have discarded that idea because of the remuneration they will demand and the paucity of space in their schedule.
Sheikh Sohel, a member of the BCB governing committee was quoted by bdcricket.com said, “In this year’s BPL opening ceremony we want to bring music stars instead of film stars. According to the last meeting of our governing council, we have changed our decision of inviting Shahrukh Khan and Alia Bhat for the program. Actually these kind of performers take more money, performing for only 15-20 minutes. Also it is tough to manage schedule from them. So we changed our decision.”
“We want to start the BPL this year with a colorful opening ceremony. People get more interest when BPL starts with a colorful program. For that reason we are planing to arrange the program with the performances of country’s big stars as well as foreign stars. It will be completely different this year,” he further added.
The last edition of the tournament was contested among 7 teams, with Dhaka Dynamites coming out victorious. Dhaka has won the league three times (Dhaka Gladiators has won it 2 times, Dhaka Dynamites has won it once) and Comilla Victorians have won it once.
