England couldn’t last even a session on the final day of the Adelaide Test which was expected to produce an exciting finish given how the teams fared on the 4th day. Josh Hazlewood picked up two wickets at the start including Joe Root’s wicket to put Australia on top. Mitchell Starc cleaned up the England’s middle and lower order to hand a 2-0 lead in the series for the Aussies with the 120-run win.

1 – Number of instances of teams losing a Test series after winning in the first two Test matches. England lost to Australia in 1936/37 after taking a 2-0 lead at end of the 2nd Test. England needs to draw/win the Test series to retain the Ashes. In 1927/28 and 1956/57, England drew with South Africa drew while Windies drew with England in 1954 after losing the first two matches of the series.
3.79 – Mitchell Starc’s economy rate of 3.79 while taking a five-wicket haul in Test cricket is the worst for any player with five and more 5-fers. Fidel Edwards’ 12 five-fers came at an average economy rate of 3.73 in this format.
4 – Joe Root’s 67 is his 4th fifty in the 4th innings of a Test match. He previously scored 87 against Australia at this venue in 2013, 66 against India in Lord’s in 2014 and 71 against Pakistan in 2015 in Dubai. England lost in all these four matches by a margin of over 90 runs.
4.55 – Mitchell Starc’s economy rate of 4.55 for his 5-fer is the worst in the 4th innings of a Test since Chris Gayle’s 5/91 against Pakistan in 2005. Gayle conceded at an economy of 4.91 during the 5-fer. Only eight players have conceded runs at a rate worse than 4.55 for a 4th innings 5-fer.
5.6% – Joe Root’s 50-100 conversion rate in 2nd innings is the joint 2nd worst for any player with ten and more fifty-plus scores. Root has converted only one of his 18 fifty-plus scores in the 2nd innings same as Stephen Fleming. England’s Robin Smith failed to convert all his ten fifties in the 2nd innings.
33 – Number of times Joe Root got out after scoring a fifty without converting it to a hundred in Test cricket. Since 2010, Root has the most dismissals between 50 and 99 in this format. Alastair Cook has 32 dismissals of 50-99 in Test cricket in this period.
138 – Australia’s total of 138/10 is the 2nd lowest 2nd innings total for Australia coming in winning cause in the last 113 years. Pakistan bowled out Australia to 127 in the 2002 Test match at the Colombo’s SSC but ended on losing side.
1904 – Australia’s 138 is the lowest all out 2nd innings total coming in winning cause in the Ashes since 1905. In 1904 in Melbourne, Australia won after getting bowled out for 133 in the 3rd innings of the match while England won after being dismissed for 103 in another game.
