Australia regained the Ashes after decimating England’s last six wickets in a matter of a session on a rain-affected day in Perth. No play was possible before Lunch on the final day due to drizzle and wet patches on the pitch but Josh Hazlewood’s five-fer ensured an innings and 41-run margin win for the Aussies few minutes before the Tea interval. Dawid Malan continued his good form with a fifty but couldn’t save his side from an Ashes defeat.

All the stats and numbers that were created during Australia’s 8th consecutive Ashes win in Perth:

5 – This was the 5th instance of England losing a Test match after scoring 400 in their first innings. Three of such games came in the last one year including two in the 2016/17 tour of India in December. Only on three other occasions, a team lost after posting 400+ total in their first innings. Pakistan against India in 2004 and Australia in 2016 lost after posting 400+ in their first innings while Sri Lanka lost in Cardiff in 2011 against England.

7 – England’s loss in this Test is their 7th consecutive loss in a Test match away from home. Their streak started from the Vizag Test in November 2016 against India. This is now their joint longest losing streak away from home equaling the 7-match streak between 1993 and 1994.

8 – England eight consecutive losses against Australia at the WACA are the most for any team at a venue against an opponent. Windies lost seven in a row against Australia between 1931 and 1976 in MCG. England’s eight consecutive losses at WACA are also the joint most in a row for a team in Test cricket at a venue. Zimbabwe lost eight Tests in a row in Bulawayo till 2017.

14 – Alastair Cook now has been a part of 14 Test defeats on Australian soil. These are the joint most number of losses a player has been a part of in an away country in this format. Sir Jack Hobbs and Sachin Tendulkar also were a part of 14 Test losses in Australia.

259 – Australia’s first innings lead of 259 is the lowest in an Ashes Test match in the last 15 years that resulted in an innings victory. Australia won the 2002 Adelaide Test match by innings and 51 runs after taking a first-innings lead of 210 runs.

403 – England’s first innings total of 403 is the highest for any team in any innings of a Perth Test coming in losing cause. India lost after posting 402 in the first innings of the 1977 Perth Test match.
