Ashes 2017-18: Alastair Cook becomes youngest player to score 12000 Test runs
He beat the previous record holder, legendary former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.
Former English skipper Alastair Cook recently became the youngest player to reach the milestone of 12000 Test runs. The veteran English opening batsman has been a pillar stone for the team for almost a decade now. Cook reached the landmark at the age of 33 years and 13 days. He beat the previous record holder, legendary former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.
Sachin had achieved the milestone number at the age of 35 years and 176 days. It is worth noting that Alastair Cook has always been tipped as the only major threat to the records held by Sachin Tendulkar in the longest format of the game. However, his recent slump in form could see him make an immature and early exit from the game.
Alastair Cook scaled up mount 12000 during the ongoing final Test of the Ashes 2017-18. In the second innings of the match, he crossed the landmark when he scored his fifth run. He eventually got dismissed on 10 as Nathan Lyon ran through his defenses.
Tough fortunes for the team and Cook
The ongoing Ashes has been a disappointing one for the English side and for Alastair Cook on the personal front. They are currently staring at an embarrassing defeat in the final Test as well. They have already conceded the Ashes after having lost the first three Tests of the 5-match series. Some spirited show, assisted by a belter track, saw the English side manage a draw in the fourth Test.
Meanwhile, Alastair had been facing the brunt of the lackluster show by England. The veteran campaigner had a disappointing run in the first three games. He, however, scored a remarkable unbeaten 244 in the fourth Test to save some pride for himself.
