Ashes 2019: England vs Australia – Statistical Review

The Ashes had its first drawn series in 47 years as the series that concluded on Sunday had a scoreline of 2-2 following England’s big win in the final Test. However, the Urn stays with Australia as they won the previous Ashes series. In fact, Australia’s retention was confirmed after their big win during the 4th Test in Manchester. This meant neither of the teams finished with a disappointment. Australia returned home with the Ashes for the first time in 18 years while the hosts earned 24 crucial ICC Test championship points.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during a rare drawn Ashes series:

8 – Number of single digits scores for David Warner in this Test series; the most single figures by any player in a Test series while batting in top six. Nine players before Warner had seven single-digit scores while batting in top 6 including two while opening the innings.

12.55 – The average runs for the opening wicket in this series of 12.55 is the lowest in any Test series of 5 or more matches. The previous lowest is 14.15 during the 5-match series between South Africa and England in 1906.

20.22 – The batting average of opening batsmen in this Test series is the lowest average in any Test series of 40 or more innings. The 1998/99 series between South Africa and West Indies had an average of 20.28 for the openers.

These two series have recorded the lowest series aggregate by the openers (min: 40 inns). The current series witnessed 809 runs scored with six fifty-plus scores while the series during 1998/99 aggregated 791 runs only with four 50+ scores.

29 – Number of wickets for Pat Cummins in this series; the most by any bowler in a Test series without a 5-wicket haul. The previous most were Wayne Clark of Australia claimed 28 wickets in the 1977/78 home series against India.

95 – David Warner’s 95 runs in this Test series recorded the first instance of a player aggregating less than 100 runs while batting in top six during a Test series. (Min: 10 innings) India’s Chandu Sarwate aggregated exactly 100 runs in the 1947/48 tour of Australia across 10 innings.

The previous lowest aggregate for an opener is 136 runs by John D’Arcy of New Zealand against England across ten innings he batted during the 1958 series in England.

774 – The 774 runs by Steve Smith in this series are the most by any player in a Test series in the last 25 years. These are the 5th most runs aggregated by any batsmen in an Ashes series.

987 – Australia’s No.4 batsmen amassed 987 runs during this series including 774 by Smith. These are the most runs scored for any team’s players while batting at No.4. West Indies players 803 runs while batting at No.4 during the 5-match series in the 1948/49 Indian tour.

In fact, these are the most runs scored by any team’s batsmen at a specific batting position in a Test series. During the 1930 Ashes series in England, the Australian players batting at No.3 aggregated 980 runs.
