England and Australia are two such teams, whose histories are very old, or rather it is considered that the beginning of cricket was from these countries. Whenever there is a match between Australia and England, there is always a neck-to-neck competition. These two sides play a Test series in a gap of two years which is named the Ashes. Here, we will tell you what is the reason behind giving the name Ashes to the series and also list out the winners of each edition.

Winning for every team in the game means saving the reputation of the country. Every team wants to register a victory for their country. The first Test match was played between England and Australia from 15 to 19 March 1877 and since then the Test match got recognition.

When Australia’s team came on a tour of England, the hosts did not want to lose on their own land. England tried to win by making every effort, but they lost eventually. England had lost a Test match for the first time on their soil. The English team was deeply saddened by its defeat and the media of England, expressing regret on the cricketers, termed the loss of the Test match as the death of the English cricket team.

During that time, the English media expressed their thoughts in the newspaper. ‘The Sports Times’ wrote in a condolence message that English cricket had died. It also wrote that after the funeral, the ashes will be taken to Australia. In this way, the name of the series between both the teams was termed the Ashes series.

In 1883, the English team left for the Australia tour, and following the same line, the English team talked about bringing back its ashes. England team wanted to bring back the lost credibility of its country at any cost. They defeated Australia by registering a 2-1 win in the 3-Test series.

After this, it had become a tradition that Australian stumps were burnt to ashes and kept in a pot and the ashes were returned with respect to the captain of England. Since then the tradition has been going on today that the Ashes trophy is considered to be the same ash vessel, and of which a duplicate copy exists now.
