The 15th edition of the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/tag/asia-cup/">Asia Cup</a> is set to kick off on August 27 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and this will be only the second time the T20 format will be used in the tournament after the 2016 edition. It was initially set to take place in Sri Lanka, but due to the economic crisis in the nation, it was moved to the middle-eastern country.

Six teams will participate in the competition, divided into two groups of three teams each. India, Pakistan and Qualifier (yet to be decided) are in Group A, and Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are in Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for Super 4, of which the top two teams will make the final.

The final of the Asia Cup 2022 will be played in Dubai on September 11. India won the previous two editions of the competition in 2018 and 2016. On both occasions, the Men in Blue beat Bangladesh in the final. Meanwhile, in 2016, fans witnessed an iconic clash between India and Pakistan, as Mohammad Amir’s new ball spell and Virat Kohli’s classy innings made the game a spectacle.

One of Virat Kohli’s best T20I innings came in the 2016 Asia Cup against Pakistan. He dealt with the relentless spell from Mohammad Amir early on with class and also took India to a promising position in the game after their initial hiccup. One of the best finishers of the recent past in Indian cricket, a team player, and a true sportsman, Suresh Raina, announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket in August 2020. The 2016 Asia Cup was still early days for India’s budding all-rounder Hardik Pandya. He put up one of his finest bowling performances with Team India during this tournament against Pakistan, picking up three wickets for only 8 runs in 3.3 overs. He had the best figures on the day across the two teams.

Pandya later made the squad for the T20 World Cup in India that year and was one of India’s regular starters. He also played in the 2017 Champions Trophy, 2019 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2021. He has battled through injuries time and again but has only grown from strength to strength as an all-rounder.

India’s long-serving captain and star player Dhoni was the Indian skipper in the Asia Cup 2016. He received a lot of plaudits for his role as a captain in the tournament, especially during the game against Pakistan, with his bowling changes and displaying an aggressive brand of cricket in the first innings.

During India’s chase, Dhoni scored an unbeaten 7 runs off three balls and also scored the winning runs. He also scored the winning runs against Bangladesh in the final. He later led the team to the semifinal of the T20 World Cup in 2016, which was his last ICC tournament as the Indian captain.

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is an all-format all-surface bowler and a reliable middle-order batter for Team India. He has also established himself as one of the go-to finishers in the shortest format in the international circuit for the Men in Blue.

Jadeja, against Pakistan in the 2016 Asia Cup, bowled three overs, conceded 11 runs and scalped the wickets of Sarfaraz Ahmed and Wahab Riaz. Jadeja, across all three formats, averages over 66 with the bat in 2022 with a top score of an unbeaten 175.

In the T20Is, he has scored 166 runs at an average of 55.33 and a strike rate of 146.90. He also has 15 wickets in the year across formats with the best figures of five wickets for 41 runs. He is also in the squad for the 2022 Asia Cup.

Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the core members of the Indian cricket team in 2016 and around that period across all three formats. He was also arguably the best spinner and bowler at the time and was known for being a prolific wicket-taker.

Against Pakistan in the 2016 Asia Cup, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/its-not-about-who-is-good-or-who-is-bad-aakash-chopra-on-ravi-ashwins-surprise-selection-for-2022-asia-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ashwin</a> bowled three overs and conceded 21 runs without picking a wicket. Jasprit Bumrah bowled one of his best and most economical spells against Pakistan in the 2016 Asia Cup. He bowled three overs with two maidens, conceded eight runs and picked up the wicket of Sharjeel Khan. This was still only his first year on the international stage but was blooming as one of the best bowlers in the world.

Ever since the 2016 Asia Cup, Bumrah has appeared in all the major ICC tournaments, including the T20 World Cups in 2016 and 2021 and the 2019 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship. He is one of the first names on the teamsheet at the moment for India.

India’s long-serving captain and star player Dhoni was the Indian skipper in the Asia Cup 2016. He received a lot of plaudits for his role as a captain in the tournament, especially during the game against Pakistan, with his bowling changes and displaying an aggressive brand of cricket in the first innings.
During India’s chase, Dhoni scored an unbeaten 7 runs off three balls and also scored the winning runs. He also scored the winning runs against Bangladesh in the final. He later led the team to the semifinal of the T20 World Cup in 2016, which was his last ICC tournament as the Indian captain.

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is an all-format all-surface bowler and a reliable middle-order batter for Team India. He has also established himself as one of the go-to finishers in the shortest format in the international circuit for the Men in Blue.
Jadeja, against Pakistan in the 2016 Asia Cup, bowled three overs, conceded 11 runs and scalped the wickets of Sarfaraz Ahmed and Wahab Riaz. Jadeja, across all three formats, averages over 66 with the bat in 2022 with a top score of an unbeaten 175.&nbsp;
In the T20Is, he has scored 166 runs at an average of 55.33 and a strike rate of 146.90. He also has 15 wickets in the year across formats with the best figures of five wickets for 41 runs. He is also in the squad for the 2022 Asia Cup.

Ravichandran Ashwin was one of the core members of the Indian cricket team in 2016 and around that period across all three formats. He was also arguably the best spinner and bowler at the time and was known for being a prolific wicket-taker.
Against Pakistan in the 2016 Asia Cup, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/its-not-about-who-is-good-or-who-is-bad-aakash-chopra-on-ravi-ashwins-surprise-selection-for-2022-asia-cup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ashwin</a> bowled three overs and conceded 21 runs without picking a wicket. He also went on to play in the 2016 T20 World Cup, 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2021 T20 World Cup but missed out on the 2019 World Cup.
In 2022, Ashwin has taken 17 wickets in nine matches across formats, with best figures of four wickets for 47 runs. He also picked up 12 wickets in the last eight T20Is and is in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2022.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled one of his best and most economical spells against Pakistan in the 2016 Asia Cup. He bowled three overs with two maidens, conceded eight runs and picked up the wicket of Sharjeel Khan. This was still only his first year on the international stage but was blooming as one of the best bowlers in the world.
Ever since the 2016 Asia Cup, Bumrah has appeared in all the major ICC tournaments, including the T20 World Cups in 2016 and 2021 and the 2019 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship. He is one of the first names on the teamsheet at the moment for India.

The classical left-arm pacer with swing, seam, accuracy and variations, Ashish Nehra retired from all forms of international cricket in November 2017. He later took up coaching roles in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2018 and Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2022.
Nehra also became the first Indian head coach to win the IPL title in 2022. Meanwhile, in the 2016 Asia Cup, he picked up six wickets in four games with an economy rate of 7.07, an average of 16.50 and a strike rate of 14.0.

The 15th edition of the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/tag/asia-cup/">Asia Cup</a> is set to kick off on August 27 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and this will be only the second time the T20 format will be used in the tournament after the 2016 edition. It was initially set to take place in Sri Lanka, but due to the economic crisis in the nation, it was moved to the middle-eastern country.
Six teams will participate in the competition, divided into two groups of three teams each. India, Pakistan and Qualifier (yet to be decided) are in Group A, and Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are in Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for Super 4, of which the top two teams will make the final.
The final of the Asia Cup 2022 will be played in Dubai on September 11. India won the previous two editions of the competition in 2018 and 2016. On both occasions, the Men in Blue beat Bangladesh in the final. Meanwhile, in 2016, fans witnessed an iconic clash between India and Pakistan, as Mohammad Amir’s new ball spell and Virat Kohli’s classy innings made the game a spectacle.

Rohit Sharma opened the innings in the game and lasted for only two balls without bothering the scorers. He was one of the victims of a fiery opening spell by Amir, getting out in the first over with a straight, fast and late inswinger that crashed into the pads. That was plumb in front, and Rohit had to surrender to an unplayable delivery.
Rohit has been one of the core members of the Indian team over the last five years or so. Today, he is the first name on the team sheet and the captain of the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/india/">Indian cricket team</a>. He captained the side on an interim basis for the 2018 Asia Cup in the absence of Virat Kohli and led them to the title.
Rohit also led the side to glory in the 2018 Nidhas Tri-Nation Series in Sri Lanka. He took over the captaincy on a full-time basis last year and led the Men in Blue to an away series win against England in T20Is and ODIs last month. He will open yet again in the upcoming Asia Cup.

Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings along with Rohit Sharma, and like Rohit, Rahane also had a forgettable game against Pakistan in the 2016 Asia Cup. He was trapped in front with an unplayable inswinging delivery that thudded onto the pad and was dismissed for a golden duck.
Rahane was destined to be one of the long-serving players of the Indian team in the longer formats. After the Asia Cup, he also went on to appear in the 2016 World Cup, making it his third appearance in a row in an ICC major event, after the 2014 <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/t20-world-cup-2022-best-possible-bowling-attack-of-all-qualified-teams/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">T20 World Cup</a> and 2015 ODI World Cup.

One of Virat Kohli’s best T20I innings came in the 2016 Asia Cup against Pakistan. He dealt with the relentless spell from Mohammad Amir early on with class and also took India to a promising position in the game after their initial hiccup. He scored 49 runs off 51 balls with seven fours and, unfortunately, was wrongly adjudged LBW.

In Tests, his emphasis on fast bowling and overseas conditions reaped fruits as India became one of the best-visiting nations around.
However, over the last two years, not only has there been a huge slump in an otherwise stupendous career, but he has also lost the natural zeal that he had on the field. He is also no more the captain of the side. However, he is still one of the core members of the side and is likely to be playing XI for India in the Asia Cup.

One of the best finishers of the recent past in Indian cricket, a team player, and a true sportsman, Suresh Raina, announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket in August 2020. One of the most valuable limited-overs players in Indian cricket, a fine middle-order batter and an instrumental left-arm orthodox spinner, Yuvraj Singh, retired from all forms of international cricket in June 2019 and last donned the blue jersey in June 2017.
