Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga hasn’t had the best of times in the last couple of years or so. His travails have mostly been attributed to lack of fitness coupled with inconsistent form. His ability to deliver yorkers at will has diminished to a significant extent owing to which the speedster hasn’t quite been a force he used to be even three to four years ago.
He last played an international match back in September 2017 against India. However, after a long break, the 35-year-old finally made his way into the national team when he was selected in Sri Lanka’s squad for the ongoing Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In the meantime, the Galle-born pacer has made a stupendous comeback in national colours.
Malinga nips out two in quick time
The Lankans are currently playing their first match against Bangladesh and the paceman has wreaked havoc in the opposition’s batting lineup. In his first spell, Malinga finished with figures of 4-1-8-2. He drew first blood in his very first over by picking up the wicket of opener Liton Das. The batter poked outside the off-stump only to find the outside edge into the hands of Kusal Mendis.
The pacer didn’t stop there and nipped out Shakib Al Hasan’s wicket in the very next delivery. He dished out a full-length delivery that shaped in and caught the batsman napping. Shakib tried to jam the ball out, but the ball snuck through to clatter into the timber. He could’ve had his third wicket had Angelo Mathews not dropped Mohammad Mithun’s catch.
In the meantime, Jasprit Bumrah, India’s fast bowler, was awestruck by Malinga’s incredible work with the leather. He took to Twitter and wrote, “What a great start on his comeback match !!!! Always a pleasure to watch him. #lasithmalinga #AsiaCup2018,”
