Mujeeb picked up the last wicket to bring the curtains down on the match.
The match between Bangladesh and Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi turned out to be a drab affair as Asghar Afghan and Co annihilated the Tigers by 136 runs. Bangladesh had their opponents by the scruff of their necks, but couldn’t latch on to the opportunities provided to them. With the victory, Afghanistan finished on top of the league table after the conclusion of the league phase in the Asia Cup.
Afghanistan rack up a competitive 255
The start wasn’t great for Afghanistan for the reason that left-arm pacer Abu Hider Rony nipped out the wickets of the openers- Ihsanullah Janat and Rahmat Shah- in quick succession. Opener Mohammad Shahzad and Hashmatullah Shahidi cobbled together 51 runs, but Shakib Al Hasan got rid of Shahzad. Afghan, the skipper, flattered to deceive twice in two matches.
Samiullah Shenwari couldn’t make an impact either. Rubel Hossain delivered the body blow with the wicket of Shahidi. After Mohammad Nabi’s dismissal, Gulbadin Naib and Rashid Khan took charge and put on an unbeaten stand of 95 runs from 55 balls. Rashid raced away to a 32-ball 57 and he along with Naib propelled Afghanistan’s score to 255 runs in 50 overs.
Spinners get Bangladesh on the mat
Bangladesh lost Nazmul Hossain and Liton Das early to find themselves in a rabbit hole. Thereafter, Gulbadin Naib picked up the wicket of Mominul Haque. Mohammad Mithun couldn’t repeat his impressive show from the previous match. Rashid Khan inflicted the Tigers with a body blow by dismissing Shakib Al Hasan. Mahmudullah followed soon after.
Rahmat Shah pinned Mehidy Hasan when the batsman tried to play a drive through the cover region. Mashrafe Mortaza had a terrible day with the leather and was unable to open his account in 11 deliveries. Abu Hider succumbed to a horrendous mix-up in the middle as Rashid threw the stumps down. Mujeeb picked up the last wicket to bring the curtains down on the match.
