Asia Cup 2018: Mushfiqur Rahim's run-out against Afghanistan decoded

Mushfiqur Rahim played an incredible knock for Bangladesh in the opening match of the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka. However, he hasn’t had the best of outings thereafter. He got out playing a rash reverse-sweep against India after he seemed to have got the measure of the conditions as well as the bowling. In their second Super 4 match against Afghanistan, he was dismissed in a bizarre manner.

After Bangladesh lost their second wicket at the score of 18, the onus was on Mushfiqur to bail the team out of a precarious position. He had Liton Das on the other end. The duo put on 63 runs for the third wicket after which Liton gave his wicket away to Rashid Khan. Shakib Al Hasan succumbed to a terrible run-out and the Tigers stared down the barrel of another lacklustre show.

Was Mushfiqur out?

After a couple of overs, Imrul Kayes and Mushfiqur got tangled in a mix-up, which led to Mushfiqur’s dismissal. Kayes blocked a wrong’un from Rashid Khan and took off for a single. However, they decided against it when Mushfiqur was halfway down the track and he had no chance of making his ground. Mohammad Nabi threw the ball and Rashid seemed to have taken the bails off.

However, the decision went upstairs to TV umpire Shaun George. Replays showed that Rashid might have knocked the stumps of with his elbow and the tricep area. Moreover, he had the ball in his hand. The umpire had a hard look at it after which he gave it in favour of the fielder.

As per the law, a fielder needs to have the ball in hand while knocking off the bails irrespective of which part of the arm the fieldsman is using to remove the bails. He went after scoring 33 runs from 52 balls with the help of a couple of boundaries and a six off Aftab Alam.
