Asia Cup 2018: Sarfraz Ahmed admits to have sleepless nights during the tournament
Sarfraz looked out of ideas at times while leading the side.
Pakistan’s dismal show on the field in the Asia Cup seems to be taking a toll on the skipper Sarfraz Ahmed. The team, under his captaincy, failed to perform to the potential and has been knocked out of the competition after losing to Bangladesh in a virtual semi-final. The tournament was extremely tough for Sarfraz as captain as he was also under pressure courtesy his poor form with the bat. However, the skipper has admitted that he hasn’t slept for the last six days during the Asia Cup.
The Men in Green failed to gun down the total of 240 runs and succumbed to the pressure when it mattered the most. Their top-order continued to struggle and were reduced to 18/3 in the fourth over which left with the middle-order doing a lot of repair work. Imam-ul-Haq tried his best but didn’t find any support from the other end which led to Pakistan only reaching 202 runs for the loss of nine wickets after 50 overs.
Sarfraz was quite animated in the post-match conference when asked if he is under pressure now having a lost major tournament before the World Cup. “Look, the pressures of captaincy are always there. Pakistani captains, whoever they are, always have pressure. Obviously, when the team is losing, there is more pressure. The truth is that I haven’t slept for the last six nights, but nobody will believe me, this is part of life and it will go on,” he said.
There is no need to panic
The 31-year-old though opined that there is no need to panic after a failure in the Asia Cup and it is important that they back the same bunch of players ahead of the World Cup. He also attributed to the fact that they made mistakes and they will concentrate on rectifying them in the near future with the mega event only eight months away.
“We need to back the players who have been doing well in the recent past. We have to look at the various mistakes we committed. Our middle order comes fails while facing the new ball and that is why we struggled. We should not lose early wickets, so we will work on that,” Sarfraz Ahmed concluded.
