Asia Cup 2022 Qualifiers: Schedule, Teams, and All You Need to Know
The Asia Cup 2022 Qualifiers are set to begin from August 20, 2022.
To fill the final spot at the upcoming Asia Cup, four teams—Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore, and the UAE—will compete in the 2022 Asia Cup Qualifier. At the Oman Cricket Academy Ground Turf 1 in Muscat, the teams will play each other once in a Round Robin format. The team that finishes first in the points standings advances to the big show, which begins on August 27 in the UAE.
The team that wins the Qualifier will be placed in Group A of the 2022 Asia Cup alongside Pakistan and India. They will play India on August 31 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Pakistan on September 2 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
How did the four teams qualify?
The Asian Cricket Council’s qualifying tournament for the Asia Cup featured 13 teams in total (ACC). The games were played at the start of 2020 before the COVID-19 lockdown was imposed worldwide. Both the Western and Eastern competitions featured eight and five teams, respectively. Two teams from those two competitions then reached the 2022 Asia Cup Qualifiers.
2020 ACC Western Region T20
Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and the Maldives participated in Group A of the first qualifying round for the Asia Cup, which was held in Muscat, Oman, while Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates competed in Group B. The top four teams were Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates after each team played three league games.
Kuwait bundled out Bahrain for 123 in the first semi-final, scoring a respectable 210-4 in their 20 overs to advance to the final. They competed against the UAE, who had prevailed in the second semifinal by a narrow margin of 28 runs after scoring 122 runs in a low-scoring thriller. After scoring 199-5 in the championship game and holding Kuwait to 97-7, the UAE went on to triumph in the Western Region T20 competition.
Kuwait and the UAE moved further to contest in the 2020 Asia Cup Qualifier.
2020 Eastern Region T20:
After China, Bhutan, and Myanmar withdrew because of COVID-19, the tournament, which was played at the Terdthai Cricket Ground in Bangkok, Thailand, was downsized to a five-team affair. Four games were played by each team. With seven and six points, respectively, Singapore and Hong Kong finished first and second in the points standings and qualified for the Asia Cup Qualifier.
