Young pacer Asitha Fernando will replace an injured Nuwan Pradeep for the remainder of the five-match series between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Pradeep, who has been the most improved Lankan bowler in recent times, suffered a minor strain on his thigh during the 3rd ODI. It is the team management’s decision to rest him and save him for the India series.

Pradeep had completed six overs and was set to bowl his seventh when he sustained the strain. He was at the top of his marks and as he ran a couple of steps, he pulled out. He limped back to the mark and it seemed obvious that he had done some damage to his thigh. Unfortunately, the 30-year-old had to walk off the pitch.

Sri Lanka’s manager Asanka Gurusinha clarified that while Pradeep could play in the fourth ODI, as a precautionary measure, he would be rested. He told The Papare, “We can play Pradeep for the 4th ODI if we wanted to but we don’t want to risk him. The physiotherapist has advised rest so he will not be a part of the remaining two matches.”

Pradeep’s replacement, Asitha Fernando is not a new face in the Lankan team. The 19-year-old was in the squad which drubbed Australia 3-0 at home. However, he is yet to make his debut for the national team. He was very impressive at the recently concluded SLC Super Provincial Limited Overs Tournament, picking up 12 wickets in 6 games at 30.75.

Nuwan Kulasekara to join the squad

Meanwhile, although it was stated in the pre-match press conference that Nuwan Kulasekara would join the squad replacing Suranga Lakmal, the experienced pacer was missing during the 3rd ODI. According to reports, Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara did not approve his selection until yesterday. Nevertheless, it seems that the minister has changed his decision and Kulasekara will now be joining the squad alongside Fernando.

Sri Lanka have taken the lead in the series after posting two back-to-back wins over Zimbabwe. The final two games of the series are scheduled on 8th and 10th July 2017.
