Aus ‘A’ vs SA ‘A’: Usman Khawaja runs himself out in most bizarre manner possible
It was a lazy run out and Khawaja would be kicking himself for that.
Australia’s Pakistan-born batsman Usman Khawaja has seen his name involved with quite a few tragic run outs till date and on Saturday, August 25, he added another such instance to the list. Playing for Australia ‘A’ against South Africa ‘A’ in a crucial tie of the ongoing Quadrangular Series in India, the left-handed batsman got himself out in a bizarre manner although his side ended up as the winner.
The match was crucial for both the visiting ‘A’ sides as both were looking for their first win in the tournament which has been marred by rain. Australia ‘A’ captain won the toss and elected to bat first in the match played in Bengaluru. The Kangaroos didn’t have the best of their start as Khawaja fell for 10 off 21 balls in the fifth over. Right-arm fast bowler Robert Frylinck hit Khawaja on his pads as he tried to force him on the leg.
Sarel Erwee’s presence of mind
The bowler and other fielders went up in appeal but was turned down by the umpire who found Khawaja decently out. But Sarel Erwee, who was standing in the slips, was alert enough to notice Khawaja wandering out of his crease casually. He hit the stumps at once and the batsman fell short of putting his bat back in. From the umpire, the appeal now went to the leg umpire who referred it to the third umpire and Khawaja was given the marching orders.
Here is the video:
Khawaja must have kicked himself when he saw the replay of his run-out after returning to the pavilion but this is not the first time that the 31-year-old batsman has found himself in the middle of run-outs in international cricket. Sometimes, even his partner got dismissed while running with him.
Australia ‘A’ were quick to overcome the bizarre run-out as their captain Travis Head hit a century to help his side register 322 for 5 in 50 overs. South Africa ‘A’ also saw their skipper Khaya Zondo hitting a century but yet they were bowled out for 290 in the 49th over, losing the game by 32 runs. Head also took 2 wickets to get adjudged as the man of the match.
