Australia made a sensational comeback on 3rd day morning to clinch the first Test against India by 8 wickets. Some tight bowling from Josh Hazlewood (5/8) and Pat Cummins (4/21) in the morning session saw India getting bundled out for just 36 runs. Mayank Agarwal’s 9 runs turned out to be India’s top individual score as India’s second innings lasted only 21.2 overs. Australia chased down the target of 90 runs for the loss of two wickets with Joe Burns scoring an unbeaten fifty.

Australia continues their winning streak:

8 – Australia has won all the eight day-night matches they have played thus far in Test cricket. The Australian team defeated as many six different sides in those eight Test matches.

7 – Australia has won all the seven Test matches they played at the Adelaide Oval with Steve Smith in the playing XI. In fact, they have not lost any of the 11 home Test matches played with both Smith and Pat Cummins in the playing XI.

India’s rare defeat after winning the toss:

1 – India lost a Test match after losing the toss for the first time under Virat Kohli’s captaincy. India won as many as 21 of the previous 25 Test matches where Virat won the toss.

2014 – The last instance of India losing a Test match after winning the toss was back in 2014 at the Gabba where Australia defeated the Indian team by four wickets.

India’s lowest total ever:

36 – The total of 36 by India is their lowest total in Test history surpassing the 42/10 against England in the 1974 Lord’s Test. It is also the joint 5th lowest total in Test history and the lowest in 65 years.

Shortest completed Test at Adelaide Oval:

564 – A total of 564 runs were scored in this match by both teams which are the fewest in a completed Test at the Adelaide Oval. The previous lowest aggregated Test match at the Adelaide Oval was the 1951 Test between Australia and West Indies where 675 runs were scored.

1246 – The Adelaide Test completed in 1246 balls; the shortest completed Test match played at the Adelaide Oval. The previous shortest Test at this venue was the first-ever D/N Test played between Australia and New Zealand in 2015 which got completed in only 1508 balls.

Bouncing back after taking lead:

1 – For the first time, Australia won a home Test series opener even after conceding a lead of 50+ runs in the first-innings. The previous highest first-innings which Australia overcame to win the opening match of a Test series is 42 runs during the 1990-91 Ashes series opener at the Gabba.

3 – Only the 2nd time India lost the first match of a Test series despite taking the first-innings lead after winning the toss. They lost the 2000 Test series opener against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium even after taking a 49-run lead after electing to bat.

Milestones for Cummins and Hazlewood:

31 – Pat Cummins, in only 31 Test matches, became the joint-fastest pace bowler to claim 150 wickets in Test cricket alongside Dennis Lillee. Cummins is also the joint 2nd fastest Australian to bag 150 Test wickets behind Clarrie Grimmett (28).

201 – Josh Hazlewood completed 200 wickets in Test cricket with help of the 5-wicket haul on Saturday. He is now the 18th player to bag 200+ Test wickets for Australia and his average of 25.69 at the moment is bettered by only five players.

Mayank @ 1000 runs:

19 – Mayank Agarwal completed 1000 runs in Test cricket only 19 innings; the 3rd fastest Indian to reach 1000 in terms of innings in Men’s Test cricket after Vinod Kambli (14) and Cheteshwar Pujara (18).

19 – Mayank is now the quickest Indian to reach 1000 runs as opener in Men’s Test cricket in terms of innings. Agarwal, in 19 innings, surpassed Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri who got there in 20 innings.

Paine levels with Dhoni:

2 – Tim Paine now has scored a fifty and claimed 5+ dismissals in an innings during the same Test; both while leading Australia team – vs New Zealand in 2019 MCG Test (79 & 5 Cts) and vs India in 2020 Adelaide Test (73* & 5 Cts).

Tim Paine is now the 2nd skipper with this double on multiple occasions in Test cricket. MS Dhoni was the first having done it twice – vs New Zealand in 2009 Wellington Test (52, 56* & 6 Cts) and vs Bangladesh in 2010 Dhaka Test (89 & 3 Cts, 2 Sts).

3 – Paine claimed five catches in India’s second innings which is the 3rd instance of his collective 5+ catches in a Test innings as a captain. MS Dhoni (3) and Sarfaraz Ahmed (3) are the other captains with 5 or more catches in a Test innings on three occasions.
