AUS vs IND, 2020-21: 3rd Test, Day 3 – Ashwin gets the better of Warner yet again, Indian innings of run-outs and more stats

Australia set for a huge lead against India at the SCG after finishing the 3rd day with 103/2 on earning a 94-run lead in the first innings. Australia made 338 in their first innings thanks to Steve Smith’s 131-run knock. India collapsed in the 2nd session on the 3rd day where they lost six wickets and bundled out for 244 from 195/4.

The Indian team was successful in getting the wickets of both Australian openers before Marcus Labuschagne (47*) put on an unbeaten 68-run stand for the 3rd wicket alongside Smith (29*).

Here are all the statistical highlights from the play during the 2nd and 3rd day of the Sydney Test match:

Indians run out of the crease:

5 – At least one Indian batsman has been dismissed run out in each of the five matches in Test cricket they played since the start of 2020. The last instance of at least one Indian getting runout in five or more consecutive Test matches was back in 2004 across the series in Pakistan (3) and against Australia at home (2).

2008 – The last instance of as many as three Indian batters getting run out in a Test innings was during the 2008 Mohali Test against England. Three Indian batters were dismissed runout in the 2nd innings while they were aiming to set a target for the visiting English team.

Ashwin gets the better of Warner yet again:

10 – David Warner now has been dismissed ten times off Ravichandran Ashwin in Test cricket; most times Ashwin has dismissed any batsman in this format. These are also the 2nd most times any bowler Warner was dismissed in Test cricket behind Stuart Broad (12).

7.2 – Warner now has a batting average of 7.2 in Test cricket at home against Ashwin as the off-spinner dismissed him in five of the six innings they faced off conceding only 36 runs. Warner has managed to score 146 runs at an average of 29.2 against Ashwin in Tests on Indian soil while getting dismissed five times.

Warner’s rare twin failures at the SCG:

3/9 – The ongoing AUS vs IND 3rd Test is only the 3rd instance of David Warner not scoring at least one 50+ score in a Test match at the SCG. The last instance was in 2014 against England where he made 16 in both innings. He played five Test matches between these two and scored four hundreds and two fifties across eight innings.

Pujara’s slowest fifty ever:

174 – Cheteshwar Pujara brought up his fifty in 174 balls which is now his slowest fifty in Test cricket. His previous slowest fifty in the longer format was off 173 balls during the 2018 Johannesburg Test against South Africa.

Smith’s record hundred:

8 – Steve Smith has as many as eight hundreds in Test cricket against India; the most number of Test tons for any player against the Indian team. Sir Gary Sobers, Sir Viv Richards and Ricky Ponting also have eight Test tons against India.

136 – Smith’s hundred in the SCG Test is now his 27th ton in this format coming in only 136 innings. He is now the 2nd fastest to 27 Test centuries behind only Sir Donald Bradman (70).

A rare good start for India:

70 – The 70-run opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill is the highest for India on Australian soil for the first wicket in Test cricket since Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra’s 123-run opening stand in the 2004 SCG Test.

28 – The pair of Rohit and Shubman batted out 27 overs for the first wicket which is now the longest opening stand for India outside Asia since the start of 2011. The last Indian opening pair to last as long as Rohit and Gill outside Asia were Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in the 2nd innings of the 2010 Centurion Test (29.3 overs).

Rohit’s milestone six:

100 – Rohit Sharma’s six off Nathan Lyon was his 100th six in International cricket against Australia making him the first player with this feat. Rohit is also just the 2nd player to hit 100 International sixes against an opponent after Chris Gayle (130 sixes vs England).

Jadeja’s record 4-fer:

2 – Ravindra Jadeja is only the 2nd left-arm spinner to bag a 4-wicket haul in Test cricket on Australian soil in the past 8 years. Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist-spinner, took a 5-wicket haul during the 2019 SCG Test. Jadeja is also the first slow left-arm orthodox bowler with a 4-fer in Australia since Rangana Herath in the 2013 SCG Test.

2006 – Jadeja is also the first left-arm spin bowler in the last 14 years to claim a 4-wicket haul on Australia soil in the very first innings of a Test match. The last such instance was in the 2006 Perth Test by England’s Monty Panesar (5/92).

Milestone wicket for Hazlewood:

301 – Josh Hazlewood completed 300 wickets in International cricket when he got the better of Rohit Sharma on Friday. He is now the 11th player from Australia to bag as many as 300 International wickets. Hazlewood was celebrating his 30th birthday on the 2nd day of the SCG Test where he picked his milestone scalp.
