The visiting Australian team led by Steve Smith did not have a great time in Chennai, as they lost the first ODI by 26 runs. The Aussies failed to keep the game in control when the Indian side was under pressure during the rain-curtailed fixture. Their batting performance, except for some explosive hitting from Glenn Maxwell, was highly disappointing especially against the two wrist spinners- Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. However, despite the loss, they are confident of making a strong comeback in the second game of the series.
Amidst the loss and the pressure, the Aussie captain has a very supportive and loving wife Dani Willis by his side. The couple arrived in Kolkata yesterday, ahead of the 2nd ODI at the Eden Gardens. The No. 1 ranked Test batsman feels his unit is thoroughly prepared and will come back hard in the remainder of the matches.
4 games to go
The Aussie skipper feels that there is still enough time left in the series for the visitors to win it. “Would have been nice to have won the game. But it’s the first in a five-match series and four (games are) left in the series. Would need to win three to win the series. (We) got to come back hard in a couple of days’ time. It did not work out as we would have liked. Hopefully, we would turn things around in Kolkata,” Smith said.
The guys were aware
The 28-year-old skipper also feels that the boys were aware and came prepared for the challenging series and knew the strengths of the Indian bowling attack.
“The guys knew what they were going to come with before this game. Everyone had seen the footage and watched a bit of the series in Sri Lanka, where they bowled quite a few (knuckle balls). It wasn’t any surprise to us. Batting for 20 overs is difficult when you’re losing wickets and trying to go quite hard. It didn’t work out as we would have liked but we’ve got to turn things around in a couple of days’ time in Kolkata,” he added.
