Australian all-rounder Hilton Cartwright will join Middlesex for the first five games of the upcoming county championship. The new season begins mid-April with Middlesex ready to take on Northamptonshire in their opening encounter on April 13. The promising all-rounder will replace his Western Australia captain Adam Voges, who served as the skipper for the club in the previous year.

Coming off the back of decent scores

The 26-year old had a decent first-class season as he finished the 2017-18 Sheffield Shield on a high, making 83 and an unbeaten 111 against South Australia in Glenelg in March. Cartwright has represented Aussies in Baggy green for a couple of Test matches.

Cartwright debuted against Pakistan in January 2017 at Sydney and played his second Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong in September. He made 37 and 18 in his two innings.Although he hasn’t fared well in the limited overs given the opportunity to play against India in two one-day internationals in October 2017.

Contention for National slection

The talented all-rounder has been presenting his case for the national selection now and again with some consistent performances as the domestic level. His 2016-17 campaign that saw him in the contention for national selection, accumulating 898 runs at 52.8, the second-best tally among all batsmen. Overall, since making debut for Western Australia in January 2013, Cartwright has mustered over 2000 runs with an healthy average of 43.4 with five centuries to his name and has claimed 19 wickets at 51.

Catrwright, who came into notice on the back of his consistent medium pace bowling is yet to take an international wicket. He was in consideration for a spot in the Middlesex squad for county championship as he was indulged in conversation with the club over the course of the last week. Cartwright also holds a British passport he will not require a visa, and in turn, can fly to the United Kingdom this week to join Middlesex before their season opener on April 13.

The all-rounder will be hoping to count on his stint with Middlesex to knock the doors for his selection in the Australian squad which has many spots up for the grabs after the exit of Smith, Warner, and Bancroft.
