Pat Cummins kickstarts his captaincy tenure in style as Australia defeated England by nine wickets in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. Chasing a target of just 20 runs, Australia lost the wicket of Alex Carey, who came to open instead of David Warner with Marcus Harris. However, Australia eventually crossed the line without much hassle. On day four, Nathan Lyon achieved his 400th Test wicket in form of well-set Dawid Malan as England started to collapse.
Joe Root, who recorded his highest Test score (89) in Australia, then became the victim of all-rounder Cameron Green as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope all couldnt do much as the British team got all out for 297 runs, setting a target of just 20 runs for the hosts. Nathan Lyon finished the innings with figures of 4/91.
Travis Head, who scored a brilliant 152 in the first innings, was declared the Player of the Match. Pat Cummins achieved double success in the match – firstly taking a five-for in the first innings and then leading his side to a big victory in his very first game as a captain. The post Tim Paine era has certainly started well for the team from down under as they would look to continue their form in the second Test and put more misery on England who now have lost 10 out of last 11 Tests in Australia.
