The inevitable happened as Christmas came a few days early for Australia as they defeated England by a massive 275 runs margin to go 2-0 up in the Ashes. Jos Buttler fought hard for his 207-ball 26 runs but he gave an early Christmas present to the Australian side as he got out hit-wicket to Jhye Richardson, who later went on to take five wicket-haul in just his second Test.
Chris Woakes recorded his highest Test score of 44 against Australia as he shared a 61-run partnership with Jos Butter in 190 deliveries. The impressive Jhye Richardson the last wicket of James Anderson while Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon bagged two wickets apiece. Ollie Pope’s poor form in the series continued as Ben Stokes also couldn’t do much and got out to Lyon for the seventh time in Tests. Marnus Labuschagne was declared the Player of the Match for his 154 runs (103 and 51) in the Test.
Already 2-0 down in the series, England, who are looking well short of ideas, will look to start afresh after Christmas and perform better in the Boxing day clash at the MCG. Joe Root will be hoping for more runs from his other batters as only he and Dawid Malan have looked in touch with the bat this series. The hosts would love to repeat the 2013 and 2017 Ashes scenarios at home where after winning the first two Tests they had clinched the third one too.
