Australia vs England, 5th Ashes Test, Day 1 Stats Review: Travis Head century, David Warner's unwanted feat and other stats

Travis Head, who missed the fourth Ashes Test after testing COVID-19 poistive, slammed his second century of the series on the opening day of the fifth and final Day/night Test in Hobart. Head replaced Usman Khawaja at his preferred no. five position with the latter opening the batting with David Warner. The 28-year old who notched up his fourth Test century, all of which have come in home conditions, scored 101 runs as he got out immediately after reaching the landmark.

Earlier in the day, visiting skipper Joe Root won the toss and opted to bowl first. His team got off to a dream start as the Kangaroos found themselves in big trouble at 12/3 with David Warner and Steve Smith bagging ducks and falling prey to the fast bowler Ollie Robinson. Usman Khawaja who scored twin hundreds in the last match didn’t contribute much either as he fell for just six runs. Marnus Labuschagne continued his good form as he scored 44 before getting bowled in an unusual fashion, round his legs to Stuart Broad.

Head was then partnered by Cameron Green as the duo added 121 runs together with the latter getting dismissed for 74, exactly the same score which he mustered in his previous innings. Broad and Robinson both took two wickets each as rain ruined the final session with Australia scoring 241/6 in 59.3 overs.

With wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc, who is having a batting average of 75.50 in the series, both on the crease the hosts would be hoping to take their score well past 300. On the other hand, the tourists will be looking to take the remaining four wickets quickly to restrict the Australians from reaching that score.

10 – David Warner surpassed Michael Slater (9) and is now the Australian opener with the second-most ducks (10) in Tests. Mathew Hayden is on top for 14 naughts to his name.

4 – Fourth Test hundred for Travis Head in Tests and all four of them have come at home.

4 – Head now has four 50-plus scores against England in Test matches, which is the most against any opposition. The left-handed batter has scored three such scores against Sri Lanka.

7 – Head became the seventh Australian batter to register a ton in Day/night Test. Marnus Labuschagne has scored three centuries while all others have one ton each.

1 – First instance where both Steve Smith and David Warner got out for ducks in the same Test innings.

6 – Smith bagged a duck just for the sixth time in his 146 innings Test career.

22 – Warner recorded the longest duck (22 balls) in Ashes in the 21st Century. Monty Panesar, Mitchell Johnson, and George Bailey all scored naughts in 19 deliveries and are joint-second.

5 – Warner now has second-most ducks (5) as an opener  in Ashes history. While he shares the record with Victor Trumper,  Michael Atherton tops the list with six naughts.

2 – Second Test hundred for Head against England. He has one each against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
