Australia vs England: Glenn Maxwell dropped from Australia ODI squad
Australia announced the 14-member squad for the 5-match ODI series against England.
Team Australia announced their 14-man squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against England. The Aussies have been very dominant in the Ashes and would want to continue their winning run in the shorter format of the game as well. Among all the headlines that the squad announcement made, the one stands out is axing of star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.
The Australian selectors have dropped Maxwell following his poor run of form in the ODI formats in the last couple of seasons. The Chief Selector, Trevor Hohns, remarked that Maxwell only averages about 20 in the previous 20 outings he has had in the ODI format. Selectors are very well aware of the fact that Glenn Maxwell can be a proven match-winner on his day but he needs to perform in the domestic level.
While Glenn Maxwell has missed out on his berth in the ODI squad, hard-hitting batsman Chris Lynn has managed to get an ODI recall. He was earlier named in the Australia squad for limited overs action against Pakistan at home last season. He, however, missed out on being a part of it following an injury. Hohns remarked that Lynn is one of the most feared batsmen of modern day cricket. He recently scored his season best score in the BBL for the Brisbane Heat.
“No-one is in any doubt about Glenn’s ability or his potential to produce match-winning contributions with the bat. What we have wanted from him is more consistency but in his past 20 matches in this format he has averaged 22 and we need more than that from a player in the side’s batting engine room,” Hohns said.
“Glenn is still absolutely in our thoughts but for this series we have decided to look again at Chris Lynn, who is now back playing once more after the shoulder injury that hampered him when we picked him against Pakistan in this format 12 months ago. He has been one of the most feared players at domestic level in limited-overs cricket in the past couple of years and we want to see if he can convert that domestic form to the international stage,” he added further.
In other developments, wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine has been named in the squad as the first choice wicketkeeper in the side. He has replaced Matthew Wade. Also, uncapped cricketers Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson have received their maiden ODI call ups for the series.
Here is the Australia squad for the ODI series:
Steve Smith (c), David Warner, Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine, Jhye Richardson, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa.
