The first Test between Australia and India is nicely poised as the hosts ended the second day with 59 runs adrift of their opponents’ first innings total. They still have three wickets in hand with Travis Head batting well at 61 and Mitchell Starc is assisting him out in the middle. Any kind of lead will be crucial for both the teams in the first innings with the game likely to go down the wire.

Earlier in the morning, it took only one ball for Australia to skittle India’s last wicket as they were bowled out on 250. But Ishant Sharma drew first blood in the opening over itself by sending Aaron Finch’s off and middle-stump for a walk. Since then, the Indian bowlers constantly had a lid over the run-scoring. Even though Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja defied them a wicket, the duo wasn’t allowed to score runs freely.

Ravi Ashwin bowled beautifully to set up the former while Shaun Marsh played an atrocious stroke soon after lunch. Peter Handscomb’s arrival brought some sense to the proceedings as he looked good despite struggling a tad at the start. He used his feet well to Ashwin who was bowling with supreme confidence. But his partner Khwaja went into a zone playing only dot balls and expectedly, he had his name written on one of the deliveries.

A sharp turn off the good length undid his front-foot defence and a faint edge on the glove was picked by the hot-spot on review. Travis Head was vulnerable early on but slowly got into his groove to play some delightful strokes.

Bumrah breaks the frustrating stand

Both of them were looking in the post-tea session and at one stage it felt like they will help Australia take the honours of the day. But it was not to be. Jasprit Bumrah kept on bowling the probing line and finally induced a poor shot from Handscomb as yet another batsman got out after getting settled. Tim Paine couldn’t trouble the scorers much and was dismissed with a peach by Ishant Sharma.

At 127/6, it looked like Team India will roll over Australia in a jiffy but Pat Cummins resisted well until the new ball arrived. Bumrah pinned him in front of the stumps but by then he had added 50 runs with Head. Starc has also shown some brilliant resistance and it will be interesting to see how much Australia add on the third morning.

Despite some brilliant bowling, Indian bowlers were trolled for not cleaning up the tail while the Aussie top-order was also at the receiving end.
