Australia tightened the grip over the second Test match in Perth as they stand five wickets away from levelling the series against India at the end of 4th day. After a wicketless morning session, Mohammed Shami ran through the Australian batting in the post Lunch session as the hosts were reduced to 207/9 from 192/4. A 36-run 10th wicket stand helped Australia set a target of 287. The home team’s bowlers made things tough for India who were reduced to 112/5 at stumps on the match’s penultimate day.
All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during the 4th day’s play of Perth Test:
A forgettable year for KL Rahul:
4 – Number of ducks for KL Rahul in 2018 in Test matches. These are the joint second most number of Test ducks in a calendar year for any player. Only 12 openers including Rahul have four or more Test ducks in a year. Only other Indian to be on this list is Pankaj Roy who had five ducks from 15 innings in 1952.
7 – KL Rahul now has been dismissed bowled seven times in his previous 12 Test innings. He was dismissed via LBW in two innings and out caught in another two. In this span, he remained unbeaten during a chase against the Windies in October in Hyderabad.
A disastrous opening pair:
3 – Number of opening partnership of zero between KL Rahul and Murali Vijay in Test matches this year. These are the joint-most number of zero-run partnerships for any opening pair in a calendar year. Among Indian pairs, the AD Gaekwad-Sunil Gavaskar pair in 1983 and Virender Sehwag-Gautam Gambhir pair in 2010 also had three such stands.
20.88 – KL Rahul and Murali Vijay have a partnership average of 20.88 for the opening wicket in Test cricket. This is the lowest for any opening pair in Test cricket with a minimum of 25 partnerships. The duo has aggregated 543 runs in 26 stands with three fifty-run stands.
Second innings Shami:
28 – Mohammed Shami’s 28 wickets in the second innings in 2018 are the most by an Asian pacer in the second innings in a calendar year. He went past former Pakistan pacer Imran Khan and Wasim Akram’s tally of 27 wickets in 1982 and 1994 respectively during the second innings.
42 – Shami claimed 44 wickets in 2018 out of which 42 have come outside India. These are the most number of wickets by an Indian away from home in Test cricket in a calendar year. Previous most Test wickets by an Indian outside home are 41 wickets by Anil Kumble in 2006.
A remarkable year for Indian pacers:
7 – Number of five-wicket hauls in Test cricket for Indian pacers in 2018. These are the most Test five-fers for Indian pacers in a calendar year, surpassing six each in 1981 and 2014.
Not making a difference:
3 – Aaron Finch is only the 3rd known batsman in Test history who has been dismissed on the very first ball after returning from ‘retired hurt’. Javed Burki of Pakistan in the 1962 Leeds Test against England and Gavin Rennie of Zimbabwe against India in the 1998 Harare Test were dismissed on the first ball after resuming their innings.
