Australia vs India, 2018-19: 4th Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights
Here are all the stats and numbers recorded during the first day’s play in the Sydney Test match.
Cheteshwar Pujara once again starred for India on an opening day in this Test series against Australia after they elected to bat first. Pujara scored an unbeaten 130 at stumps on the first day of the Sydney Test to push India’s total to 303/4. As KL Rahul got out early again, the other opener Mayank Agarwal chipped in with a 77 before losing his wicket in an attempt to hit one shot too many. Virat Kohli (23) and Ajinkya Rahane (18) failed to score big before an unbeaten 75-run stand between Pujara and Hanuma Vihari (39*) helped them end the day on high.
Here are all the stats and numbers recorded during the first day’s play in the Sydney Test match:
A series to cherish for Cheteshwar:
3 – Cheteshwar Pujara is only the 3rd Indian player to score three or more centuries in a Test series in Australia. Virat Kohli struck as many as four tons in the 2014-15 tour while Sunil Gavaskar scored three during the 5-match Test series in 1977/78.
458 – Runs Pujara has scored in this Test series thus far; the most he has accumulated in any Test series surpassing the 438 runs for the 4-match home Test series against England in 2012. This is the 3rd time Pujara has scored over 400 runs in a Test series against Australia with the other two being the 2013 and 2017 home Test series.
He is the 3rd player after Matthew Hayden (2001 in India; 2003/04 and 2007/08 in Australia) and Sachin Tendulkar (1998 and 2010 in India; 2007/08 in Australia) to aggregate 400+ in an Australia-India Test series on three different occasions.
Pujara and Kohli go past Dravid and Sachin:
373 – In the five partnerships in this series, Pujara and Virat Kohli added 373 runs for the 3rd wicket. These are the most runs by an Indian pair for the 3rd wicket in a Test series against Australia surpassing 363 runs by Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar pair during the 2003/04 tour. Pujara-Kohli’s four 50+ partnerships in this series are also the joint-most by India’s 3rd wicket pair in an away Test series.
Yet another record for Kohli:
399 – Innings Virat Kohli needed to complete 19000 runs in International cricket. He is the fastest among the 12 players to achieve this milestone. Sachin Tendulkar was the previous fastest to the milestone as he got there in 432 innings; one less than Brian Lara (433 inns).
A rare opening pair:
1 – For the first time in Indian Test history, two players from Karnataka opened the batting in the same innings. Interestingly, both KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are among the three players who have scored a triple century for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy.
5 – Rahul-Mayank pair is only the 5th opening pair and the first from India to open the innings in a U19 CWC game and in a Test match. Windies’ Darren Ganga/Chris Gayle, Pakistan’s Imran Nazir/Taufeeq Umar, South Africa’s JA Rudolph/Graeme Smith and Windies’ Adrien Barath/Kieran Powell are the other four such pairs.
