India put themselves in a position where they are assured of their maiden Test series win in Australia by posting 622/7 in their first innings. Resuming the second day on 303/4, India added 319 runs in 77.2 overs with help of big hundreds from Cheteshwar Pujara (193) and Rishabh Pant (159). Pujara fell short of a double century before a record 204-run partnership for the 7th wicket between Pant and Ravindra Jadeja (81). The duo added those runs in only 224 balls to help India declare with ten overs to go for stumps.

India piles on records:
1 – India became the first visiting side in Australia to declare on three successive occasions. They are also the only side to declare their innings on three consecutive occasions against the Aussies in Test cricket and they have done that on two different instances. India declared three consecutive innings against Australia in the 2008 home Test series as well.
5 – Sydney has recorded the highest score for India in a Test series in Australia for the 5th consecutive time. The last time India didn’t get their highest score on a Test tour in Sydney was during the 1999/00 tour.
622/7 – India’s total of 622/7 is their 2nd highest Test total in Australia behind 705/7 in the 2004 Test match also in Sydney. Overall, this is India’s 4th highest Test total against the Aussies.

A record partnership:
5.46 – Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja’s partnership run-rate of 5.46 is the 4th best for any 200-run stand for India in Test cricket. The top three were recorded during the 2009 home series against Sri Lanka with all the three partnerships involving Virender Sehwag.
204 – The partnership of 204 between Pant and Jadeja is India’s first ever 200-run stand against Australia for the 7th and lower wicket. This is their 7th double century stand in Test cricket for 7th and lower wicket. This is also the first ever 200-run stand by any pair for the 7th wicket in Australia. There are two 200+ stands for the 8th wicket on Australian soil in this format.

26 – Mitchell Starc bowled 26 overs in India’s first innings conceding 123 runs for one wicket without bowling a maiden over. The 26 overs he delivered are the most by a player bowling the first over of a Test without managing a maiden. South Africa’s Charlie Llewellyn bowled 25 overs with figures of 2/92 in the 1911 Sydney Test against Australia.
100 – The is the first time as many as four Australian bowlers conceded 100 and more runs in a Test innings against India at home. This is the 10th occasions when four bowlers conceded 100+ runs in a home Test innings and only the 2nd in the first innings of the Test match. The other such instance was against England in the 1986 Perth Test.
