Rain made an unwanted appearance in India’s first game on the tour of Australia as the first T20I at the Gabba in Brisbane has been halted during the first innings. India elected to bowl first after winning the toss and excluded Yuzvendra Chahal from the 12-man squad announced on Tuesday. Australia roped in leg-spinner Adam Zampa in place of Nathan Coulter-Nile which was the only change which they made to the XI that ended on the losing side against South Africa last week.

The opening partners Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar contained the Aussie openers giving away only 24 runs from the first over. As a result, D’Arcy Short, who scored 7 off 12, holed out on the first ball he faced from Khaleel Ahmed trying to increase the rate. Aaron Finch and Chris Lynn added 40 runs in only 4.2 overs before Finch tried to take on Kuldeep Yadav. Lynn looked in his comfort zone smashing three sixes in an over off Khaleel.

Finch struck four sixes and a boundary during his 20-ball 37 at his home ground before handing a return catch to Kuldeep. The duo of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis attacked Krunal Pandya and the left-arm spinner conceded 55 runs in his four overs. Khaleel, who bowled three overs before the rain interval, conceded 42 runs. The play was abandoned due to rain just after Khaleel dropped a sitter in the third-man region with a total of 153/3 on the board in 16.1 overs.

Possible targets for India if Australia doesn’t bat again:

The break could prove crucial for India given the way the Aussies were flying but that will also cost them on the Duckworth-Lewis Stern method. In case Australia’s innings coming to an end at 16.1 overs only, they could end up chasing 172 in 16 overs which is 10.75 runs an over while Australia’s run-rate was 9.46. A minimum of five overs are required to produce a result. In such a scenario, the visiting side has to chase 67 runs in 30 deliveries but with all the ten wickets in hand.
