India lost the opening match against Australia at the SCG and found themselves in troubles as they were needed to win the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval to keep their hopes alive in the three-match series. In the end, the visiting team won by six wickets with four balls to spare. Most importantly, India managed to draw level in the series with one match remaining to be played on Friday, January 18.

Marsh wields the willow

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Australia scored 298 for nine in 50 overs. The hosts lost a couple of wickets in the form of skipper Finch and wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Even Usman Khawaja couldn’t make an impact and got out for 21 in the 19th over. Even Peter Handscomb promised with 20 runs from 22 deliveries and fell prey to left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, stumped by the MS Dhoni.

At the other end, Shaun Marsh didn’t let the pressure unnerve him and accomplished his half-century in 62 balls. The 35-year-old notched his seventh ODI ton in 108 balls and went on to score 131 runs from 123 balls with 11 boundaries and three sixes. Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell contributed with 29 and 48 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up four wickets while Mohammed Shami picked up three.

Kohli and Dhoni take India home

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan cobbled together a stand of 47 from 46 balls and took India off to a decent start in the run-chase. But both couldn’t cash in on the starts. Nevertheless, Virat Kohli came to the party and smothered the bowling with sheer ease. The 30-year-old notched a half-century in 66 balls and then scored his 39th ODI century in 108 balls. He got out with India needing 57 from 38 balls.

In the last few overs, the onus was on MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik to shepherd the team home to victory. In the last three overs, the visitors needed 25 runs. In the last over, Jason Behrendroff was required to defend seven runs and Dhoni deposited him over long on for a six and scored a fifty to turn the match in India’s favour. MS picked up a single in the second ball of the over to script India’s thumping victory.
