Pat Cummins wreaked havoc in the third session of Day 3 to keep Australia in the game in the third Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). India, after garnering a first-innings lead of 292 runs, were in a strong position, but they had a tough time in their second innings. At the close of play on Day 4, while, Australia need 141 runs, India need two wickets to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series.
India set Australia a massive target
India resumed the day with the score at 54/5 and with a humungous lead of 346 runs. Mayank Agarwal and 21-year-old Rishabh Pant were the overnight batsmen and the duo put together a stand of 39 runs to further stretch India’s lead. Pat Cummins broke the stand, dismissing the right-handed Agarwal, who could only score 42 runs from 102 deliveries with four boundaries and a couple of sixes.
Cummins also picked up a stupendous five-wicket haul. The speedster picked up his sixth wicket in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, who managed only five runs. After Josh Hazlewood nipped out Rishabh Pant, who scored 33 from 43 balls, India decided to declare with their score at 106/8 in 37.3 overs. Most importantly, the visiting team set a colossal target of 399 for Australia to track down.
Cummins shine with the bat
The run-chase didn’t start on an auspicious note for the hosts as Aaron Finch became Jasprit Bumrah’s victim in the second over. Marcus Harris couldn’t impress either and the left-hander fell prey to Jadeja after scoring 13 runs from 27 balls. Usman Khawaja threatened with a 59-ball 33 with four boundaries, however, seamer Mohammed Shami trapped him plumb in front to cut short his knock.
Shaun Marsh, after impressing with 44 runs, was nipped out by Bumrah. Mitchell Marsh’s horror run continued and he became Jadeja’s second victim. Travis Head perished to Ishant after scoring 34. With two wickets to get, India took the extra half-an-hour, but it didn’t work out Virat Kohli’s men. Cummins impressed with the bat as well and scored 61 runs from 103 deliveries with five fours and a six.
