In a bid to win the first Test series in Australia, India took the field in the fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground and by the close of play of Day 1, the visitors won’t be disappointed by any stretch of the imagination. India finished with 303 for the loss of four wickets. Cheteshwar Pujara racked up his 18th Test century and frustrated the Aussies, who find themselves in trouble in the first day itself.
Agarwal with another master-class
India won the toss and had no hesitation whatsoever to bat first, but didn’t get off to the best of starts as KL Rahul, who made a comeback to the side, perished to speedster Josh Hazlewood after scoring nine from six balls with a couple of boundaries. However, Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara put their heads down and made sure that the visitors don’t lose any more wickets before the lunch break.
Even as Agarwal was the aggressor in the stand, Pujara displayed a tremendous temperament and India played out the session with 69 runs from 24 overs. Mayank started the second session in a positive manner and accomplished his second half-century in 96 balls. Just when he fathomed scoring a ton, off-spinner Nathan Lyon accounted for his wicket after he churned out 77 runs from 112 deliveries.
Pujara buckles down
Following Agarwal’s dismissal, the captain Virat Kohli joined Pujara and the duo put together 54 runs. In the meantime, Pujara completed his fifty in 134 balls. Having scored 177/2 in 54 overs at Tea, India undoubtedly had the upper hand. In the first over after the break, Hazlewood accounted for the wicket of Kohli, who looked good with a knock of 23 with four boundaries. Ajinkya Rahane came in next.
The Mumbai-batsman tried his very best and cobbled together 48 runs with Pujara. Unfortunately, the right-hander became Mitchell Starc’s first victim after scoring 18. Pujara went on to score his third ton of this series in 199 balls and remained not out on 130 with 16 fours. Hanuma Vihari pressed the accelerator a wee bit and scored 38 with five fours in an unbeaten stand of 75 runs with Pujara.
