Australia were in with a massive task going into the Day 3 of the fourth Test against India at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) as they were trailing by a humungous 598 runs. The hosts started well on the third day, but lost wickets in the middle to give away the advantage to Virat Kohli and Co. By the end of the day, Tim Paine’s men are still trailing by 386 runs in the first innings with four wickets remaining.
Harris buckles down
Marcus Harris and the left-handed Usman Khajawa were the overnight batsmen and the duo put on a solid stand of 72 runs, after which Kuldeep Yadav accounted for the latter’s wicket in the 22nd over. Nevertheless, Harris and the new number three- Marnus Labuschagne- put their heads down to stitch another useful partnership of 56 runs. Harris accomplished his half-century in just 67 deliveries.
At lunch, Australia were at 122/1. After Harris was nipped out by Ravindra Jadeja for 79, the home team lost their way a wee bit. Shaun Marsh couldn’t make any impact and Jadeja picked him up after he scored eight runs. Three overs later, Mohammed Shami got rid of Labuschagne after the all-rounder racked up 38 patient runs from 95 balls with seven fours. Meanwhile, the hosts were reduced to 152/4.
Handscomb and Cummins steady the ship
Following the fifth wicket, Travis Head and Peter Handscomb tried to resurrect the innings with a stand of 40 runs and didn’t play any rash stroke. To their dismay, Kuldeep came to the party and removed Head, who offered the tweaker a simple caught and bowled opportunity. The left-hander scored 20 runs from 56 balls. Kuldeep kept turning the screws and castled Aussie skipper and wicketkeeper Tim Paine.
Handscomb and Pat Cummins then made sure that Australia don’t lose any wickets by the close of play. Rain also helped their cause as only 15.3 overs were possible in the third session. Even as Handscomb is not out on 28 runs from 91 balls, Cummins also showed grit and determination to stay unbeaten on 25 runs from 41 balls. Paine’s men have loads of work to do with a couple of days left in the Test series.
