Mayank Agarwal had a dream 2017-18 domestic season. The Karnataka star had piled 1160 runs in 13 innings of the Ranji Trophy. In that very season, he had scored his maiden triple century in first-class cricket when he slammed 304 not out against Maharashtra. His red-hot form continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy too, where he amassed 723 runs in 8 matches at an average of 90.37.

It helped him become the highest run-getter in one season of the tournament. At the end of the 2017-18 season, Agarwal became the most prolific run-scorer across formats in the domestic arena. The right-hander scored 2,141 runs across all formats in 2017-18. He also impressed for India A and was finally rewarded with his maiden Test call-up for the series against Windies at home. However, he did not play any game and was surprisingly dropped for the ongoing series in Australia. But he was recalled again for the last two Tests after fellow opener Prithvi Shaw sustained an injury and was ruled out.

And finally, on Wednesday, he made his much-anticipated debut in the ongoing Test in Melbourne. But while the whole cricketing fraternity was keen to see Agarwal in international cricket, former Australia cricketer Kerry O’Keefe, who played 24 Tests and 2 ODIs between 1971 and 1977, took a dig at Agarwal just before the start of the game.

Pointing out about his triple century, O’Keefe said, “Mayank Agarwal scored his triple century against Railways kitchen staff team.”

Agarwal gives a fitting reply

Well, it did not take Agarwal long to make O’Keefe eat his words as the India opener made a memorable fifty on his debut. He showed remarkable composure in the tough opening hours and went on to compile a fine fifty. His knock was finally ended by Pat Cummins in the final over before tea. Prior to that, Agarwal scored 76, thus laying the foundation for a good total as India aim to win their first Test series Down Under.
