India were dealt with a severe blow as their 19-year-old sensation Prithvi Shaw was ruled out of the first of the four-match Test series in Adelaide. He sustained the lateral ligament ankle injury while fielding on the third day of the warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI in Sydney. With the opening slot opening up now, Michael Vaughan has suggested the visitors to play Rohit Sharma terming him as a ‘too good’ to fail in Test cricket.
Shaw was grimacing in pain after the unfortunate incident and had to be carried off the field by the physio Patrick Farhart and the other member from the Indian support staff. After some time, the BCCI gave an official update later informing that he has been ruled out of the series opener. Shaw will now undergo intensive rehabilitation and will be racing against time to be fit for the second Test.
Vaughan favours Rohit
Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan expressed his disappointment about the fact that Prithvi Shaw has been ruled out of the action thereby backing Rohit Sharma to come good at the top of the order. He is of the opinion that India’s limited-overs opener is too good and has left him baffled that he hasn’t got going in the longest format.
“Such a shame if @PrithviShaw misses the 1st Test versus the Aussies .. Fantastic young talent .. I personally would replace him with @ImRo45 at the top of the order .. He is far too good not to master Test Cricket .. #AUSvIND,” he tweeted.
As far as Rohit’s Test record is concerned, he has amassed 1479 runs in 43 innings at an average of 40 which looks decent. But his vulnerability against the moving red cherry sidelines Rohit from donning the white jersey regularly for India. Having said that, he hasn’t opened in Tests ever and would be interesting to see how he fares if, at all, opts to send him at the top of the order.
