He has been one of the biggest names that Australia have produced in spin bowling. In fact, Nathan Lyon’s bowling record against India, known to be one of the finest sides to tackle spin, has been better even than the great Shane Warne. Lyon reaped another rich haul of eight wickets in Perth to help Australia win the match by 146 runs and level the four-match series.
Lyon sought to tell Ishant Sharma on his stance
The 31-year-old New South Wales off-spinner is also known for his cool temperament on the ground besides being a serious student of the game. Lyon, who refused to make headlines by getting into the Virat Kohli controversy on the ground in Perth, chose to focus more on lighter issues and one such occasion came when he told Ishant Sharma, who just came in to bat, about his batting stance.
Lyon’s humour was reciprocated to by Ishant and even umpire Kumara Dharmasena was seen smiling at Lyon’s effort to don the officials’ mantle.
Lyon was seen asking Ishant whether he was going take guard on his off stump after the latter came out to bat to replace Rishabh Pant who was dismissed by the spinner. “You’re going to give?” asked back Ishant with a smile. Their conversation was caught on the microphone on the wicket and cricket.com.au later shared the video on Instagram and it was an instant hit.
Ishant though did not last long and India lost their last three wickets for as many runs in two overs to get bowled out for a paltry 140 and lose the match by 146 runs. The two unbeaten batsmen – Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant – resumed on Day 5 from the overnight score of 112 for 5 but far from a fight, the visitors capitulated meekly on the final day. The four-game series is now tied 1-1 with the third match set to begin in Melbourne on Boxing Day.
